Amilcar Cabral and his Legacy
PRESS RELEASE - PRESS RELEASE - PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release ---For further information:On July 6, 2002, there will be a lecture celebrating the life of Amilcar Cabral and his legacy
at the Cape Verdean Progressive Club,
329 Grosvenor Ave., East Providence, RI
from 3PM to 6PM.
Presenting the following topics:
Amilcar Cabral (Born: 1924 Died: January 20, 1973)
Architect and undisputed leader of the PAIGC & the national liberation movement in Guinea-Bissau.
In the early 1950s, Cabral was employed as an agronomist. Using this position, he went to every village in the entire country and, from this direct observation, he came up with an analysis and strategy for the national liberation movement. With others, he founded the PAIGC in 1956, and in 1963 their full-blown military campaign to overthrow Portuguese colonialism (and free Cape Verde) began. Within two years they had extensive liberated zones where effectively they were in power.
In 1971 Cabral argued for the creation of the National People's Assembly, which was created in 1972 and based on popular vote in the liberated territories. In January 1973, just months before the victory of the national liberation struggle, Cabral was assassinated with the help of Portuguese agents operating within the PAIGC.* (www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/6353/cabral/biog.html)
A discussion of the above topics with public participation is encouraged.
A reception will follow.

Portuguese/African Encounters Congress 2002
April 25-29, 2002
Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University, USA
Brown University will host the Portuguese/African Encounters International Congress from April 25ñ28, 2002. Approximately 100 international participants, including scholars, authors, artists, and diplomats will convene to examine the historical and contemporary relationship between Portugal and Africa, the global effects of this encounter, and the current state of Lusophone African studies.
The Portuguese African Encounters International Congress 2002 will explore the complex role Portugal played for centuries as a bridge between Europe and Africa; the decolonization of Portuguese territories in Africa; the rise of the newly independent states such as Mozambique, Angola, GuinÈ Bissau, S“o TomÈ e PrÌncipe, and Cape Verde; and the broader global effects of this long history of Portuguese-African interaction.
Through art, film, literature, diplomacy, and socio-historical scholarship, the Congress will consider a broader agenda: how can the Luso-African experience inform scholars and policymakers about north-south global encounters and their outcomes? The Congress program comprises several events including an Ambassadors' Roundtable, a literary symposium, An interdisciplinary social science conference, exhibition of paintings and drawings, and A Luso-African film series.

This February, to commemorate Black History Month, HBO Films will present two memorable movies chronicling the "journey to today" taken by African-Americans: The Middle Passage and Lumumba. The films examine very different facets of the ongoing and complex relationship between Africa and America.
LumumbaAt the Berlin Conference of 1885, Europe divided up the African continent. The Congo became the personal property of King Leopold II of Belgium. On June 30, 1960, a young self-taught nationalist, Patrice Lumumba, became, at age 36, the first head of government of the new independent state. He would last two months in office.

Islands of the World VII: New Horizons in Island Studies
June 26-30, 2002
[Note: Deadline for proposals has been extended to Feb. 15, 2002 - rl]
Subject: Seeking information from scholars doing research on African island
states
Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002
From: Henry Srebrnik, University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, PEI, Canada
I am a professor of political studies at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, Canada. We will be hosting an international conference, Islands VII, dealing with Islands of the World, which will be held here June 26-30, 2002. It is organized under the auspices of our Institue of Island Studies at the university and the International Small Islands Studies Association, whose membership includes scholars, researchers, and island enthusiasts from around the world. Since 1992, the ISISA has sponsored Islands IV (1994), in Okinawa; Islands V (1996), in Mauritius; and Islands VI (2000),in the Isle of Skye.
The Islands of the World VII conference will, like its predecessors, welcome a wide variety of presentations related to islands and island issues, from both traditional academic and non-traditional approaches. However, the conference will also devote special sessions to in-depth consideration of the emerging role of Island Studies in academe. The conference will feature keynote addresses on themes crucial for islands and Island Studies, including globalization, democratization, environment, culture and identity, and population health. But much of the conference's shape will be determined by its participants' diversity, their interchange, and their presentations. For further details and information, see our website at www.upei.ca/islandstudies/islandsvii
We are particularly interested in receiving submissions from scholars from, or doing research in, sovereign Lusophone island states such as Cape Verde, Sao Tome e Principe and (soon to be independent) East Timor. We would also welcome papers dealing with other islands such as the Comoros, Mauritius, Reunion, the Seychelles, and Zanzibar. Could you kindly circulate this appeal among your membership and also post it on other websites? Thank you very much for your help.
Yours truly,
Henry SrebrnikConference
New Research on Lusophone Africa
16-17 May 2002
King's College, London
Patrick Chabal, Norrie MacQueen and Malyn Newitt are organising a conference on Lusophone Africa to be held at King's College next May.
The conference is jointly organised and sponsored by the Department of Politics at the University of Dundee and by the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at King's College, London.
The occasion of the conference is the publication of a new book edited by Patrick Chabal (and to which Malyn Newitt has contributed) entitled Lusophone Africa since Independence: A History (to be published by Hurst and Indiana University Press). The co-authors to the book will be attending the conference and giving papers. The conference organisers want to celebrate the publication of a book on Portuguese-speaking Africa by providing an opportunity for a group of young scholars who either already have their doctorates or who are nearing completion to present their new research work.
Although the conference will raise important issues in the new historiography of Lusophone Africa, it is primarily designed to focus on regional and local studies in the five Portuguese-speaking African states: Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and S“o TomÈ e PrÌncipe. This work will bring out important regional differences in the colonial and postcolonial developments which underlie the more generally understood national evolution of these countries. The conference will be an occasion to discuss the work done by a new generation of scholars working on Portuguese-speaking Africa and to bring together all those interested in the history of this often poorly understood part of the African continent.
The organisers hope very much that you will be able to attend the conference and contribute a paper.
Efforts are being made to obtain funding for this project but if you have any way of obtaining funds to cover your travel and accommodation costs, it would be very helpful.
I will keep in touch with you as the project develops but if you have any queries please contact Malyn Newitt by mail, at malyn.newitt@kcl.ac.uk
