Study Abroad

Why Study Abroad?

Some students just get the bug to go abroad because they want adventure, like to travel, or just want to experience something new. Others are in a particular field of study which can clearly benefit from spending time abroad. Other students do not even consider studying abroad because they -- or their parents! -- assume that there is no concrete advantage to studying abroad. In fact, however, there are several good reasons to consider studying abroad as an integral part of your education at UMass Dartmouth.

A. Academic Credit
Nearly all UMass Dartmouth students who choose to study abroad will have their classes transferred back and receive UMass credit. In many cases, the courses are transferred back as specific UMass courses and are therefore useful for fulfilling major and general education graduation rquirements. At the very least, these students receive credit towards the 120 credits they need for graduation. The key is choosing the right program for your needs, in consultation with your academic advisor and department chairperson.  There is absolutely no reason that studying abroad should delay your graduation from UMass Dartmouth!

B. Language Acquisition

Do you study a language at UMass Dartmouth? Do your relatives speak a language at home you would like to understand better? The best way to improve your language skills is to immerse yourself in a land where the language is spoken. Students who have experienced language immersion programs always come back far more fluent in their language than their classmates who have only experienced a language in an American classroom setting. It is also the best way to learn the culture of a country, an important aspect of learning to communicate with people in their own language. In addition, the ability to speak another language fluently is an extremely valuable skill for marketing yourself to potential employers, whether you are interested in pursuing a career in business, education, or government service.

C. Resume Builder

International experience is good way to differentiate yourself from run-of-the-mill graduates in your field. Most companies are internationally-minded in today's world and they are always on the lookout for employees who can speak another language or have international experience. For one, employers are often impressed with applicants who have taken the opportunity do more than just the minimum to graduate and get a job. In addition, many employers are looking for people who are versatile and adaptable, so a demonstration of your willingness to seek out new experiences and your ability to succeed in a new environment can be crucial to catching the eye of someone reviewing your resume. Not to mention, having a relevant story to tell in an interview or having relevant experience listed on your resume can be just the edge you need to get that big break. Study abroad shows that you are independent, open-minded, and diverse.

D. Experience
Studying abroad is the perfect way to grow as a person. You will broaden your horizons, develop your intellect, and overcome your inhibitions. As anyone who has gone abroad for a length of time can tell you, the experience can change your life. You will meet new people, see new places, expose yourself to new cultures, engage new ideas and return with a better understanding of the world, your studies, and yourself.
