What makes UMass Dartmouth special?
Because we're a university, a UMass Dartmouth education stretches beyond your major and a specific career path into other areas that may interest or challenge you. You'll learn how to question and analyze, how to consider all viewpoints, and how to act ethically and responsibly.

Only at UMass Dartmouth
Distinctive centers and programs at UMass Dartmouth demonstrate our commitment to the community and our leadership in addressing contemporary issues. They also add an extra dimension to your studies here.
Study abroad
More and more students are studying abroad, taking advantage of a variety of programs. Many students spend a semester in countries such as Australia, Germany, Portugal, France, and Ireland.
You can also study and travel abroad for shorter stays. For example, there is a special two-week program for business majors interested in Germany, while other students can spend a summer month in Portugal. We have special exchange agreements with a number of foreign universities, and the Study Abroad office helps students with travel, curriculum, financial, and residential questions.
Opportunities beyond the classroom
Your education is more meaningful when you extend it beyond the classroom. You'll gain self-confidence, practical knowledge, and experience through opportunities such as:
- Internships and experiential learning
- Co-op for engineering majors
- Working with professors on their research
- Independent learning
- Community service
Honors Program
The Honors Program is for students who like to set the bar higher, academically speaking, and offers:
- courses that are challenging and stimulating
- colloquia and an annual convocation
- opportunities for independent research projects
Pre-med and pre-law
As many alumni will tell you, you can definitely get there from here. The biology and chemistry departments offer formal pre-med programs for students planning medical careers. Many students thinking of a law career choose a business or arts/sciences major; the pre-law site offers additional information.
Students should contact faculty listed in the catalog as pre-med and pre-law advisors. Also, through our "3 + 3" partnership with nearby Southern New England School of Law, qualified students can combine their last year at UMass Dartmouth with their first year at the law school.
Self-made: Multidisciplinary studies
The "multidisciplinary studies" major is for the student whose interests demand an individualized program, such as environmental studies or communications/photography. Students apply for the major after their first semester, and work with faculty members to develop a cohesive, meaningful program.
