Student services
There may be times when you need to ask a question or seek advice. Here's an overview of some of our main student support programs.
Please visit the Student Affairs web site for additional information.
Academic Advising Center
At the Academic Advising Center, faculty and staff can help you on all sorts of issues, academic and otherwise. If a student is struggling with a course, for example, the center can steer him or her to the best tutoring option. The centers focus is the student's overall growth and development, including, but not limited to, academic success.
Academic Resource Center
The Academic Resource Center provides academic assistance; it's the place for help with writing papers, understanding course material, preparing for exams, and improving study skills. At no cost, the center offers peer tutoring, study groups and study partners, workshops on academic issues, and individualized assessments.
Counseling Center
The Counseling Center can advise students on personal issues, from homesickness, to relationships, to test anxiety, with workshops and seminars throughout the year. The Alcohol & Drug Education program provides counseling, intervention, and programs on substance abuse.
Health Services
Health Services are there to help when you need them. Located near the residence halls, the office is open weekdays and many Saturdays during the school year. Its staff of nurse practitioners, nurses, and a consulting physician, dermatologist, and nutritionist can handle many health care needs, and make appropriate referrals when necessary. The university is only 15 minutes away from two major hospitals.
Health Services also offers programs on issues pertinent to college students, including substance abuse, eating disorders, and sexual activity.
Career Resource Center
The Career Resource Center provides students and alumni a wide array of career and employment related services. Its staff also coordinate community service activities and experiential learning opportunities.
Public Safety
A college campus, like any other community, makes every effort to maintain safety. Our Public Safety officers patrol the campus around the clock; receive specialized education in investigative measures and areas such as first-aid; are trained at the states Criminal Justice Academy; and have full law enforcement power.
To keep students safe:
- call boxes, located throughout campus, connect directly to the police station
- the "DART" shuttle van travels around campus at night, providing a means of safe transportation
- officers can provide escort service, depending on staff availability
- the Crime Prevention Unit offers services such as a rape defense class and alcohol awareness workshops
