Description: Domestic third party logistics revenue is projected to decrease 7% in 2009 to $118 billion. This is the first year on record that an industry once considered as "recession proof" will show a year over year decline. Non-asset based transportation management companies represent approximately 30% of the market with C.H. Robinson as the top provider. The primary models to generate revenue in this segment include broker billing, commissions, gain sharing and cost plus. Traffic management, freight bill administration, technology and customer service are the core services offered by most companies. Logistics Management, Inc. (LMI), based in Fall River, MA, is a top 30 non-asset based transportation management company. Several examples of "value-added" services are presented to demonstrate how the company achieves competitive advantage. Customer expectations are high and present challenges for 3PLs to provide the lowest transaction price, customized technology, proactive notification and a process of continuous improvement. Companies that can differentiate its services and have strong carrier partnerships will be in the best competitive position for long term success as the industry matures and likely enters a consolidation phase.

Mr. Michael Desmarais is Vice President of Operations at Logistics Management, Inc. As Vice President Operations, Michael is responsible for the company's analytical, freight bill processing and customer service departments. He also manages carrier relationships and oversees the accounting and information technology departments. Michael joined LMI in 1991 as Customer Service Manager and was promoted to Logistics Manager in 1993, Director of Sales in 1995, and his current position as Vice President Operations in 1997. Michael has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island and a Graduate Certificate in Supply Chain Management from Northeastern University. He is also a part-time instructor in the Charlton College of Business at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
