TEACHING (AND LEARNING) CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
WITH DR. JUDY BOSS, VISITING SCHOLAR, BROWN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
LUNCH PROVIDED AT 11:30 AM (Please register so that we do not waste food) In its 1983 landmark report A Nation at Risk, the National Commission on Education warned that nearly 40 percent of 17-year-olds cannot draw inferences from written material. For many years thereafter it was assumed that students would acquire critical thinking skills in college. Unfortunately, evidence shows that most college students are still graduating with deficiencies in critical thinking skills--skills that are essential for making effective decisions in their personal, academic, professional, and civic. This workshop will provide faculty with a background in student development, going from freshman dualistic thinking to the relativistic thinking typical of sophomores and juniors to a level of more complex reasoning where students are able to deal effectively with ambiguity and challenges. The workshop will also provide ideas, including classroom exercises and journal assignments, for moving students from a lower to a higher stage of reasoning. Judy Boss is an academic writer for McGraw-Hill Publishers and a visiting scholar with Brown University Department of Philosophy. She also teaches a course in Logical Thinking at UMass Dartmouth. She has a PhD in Social Ethics from Boston University and a MS in Human Development from the University of Rhode Island. She is currently in the process of writing a textbook on Logic and Critical Thinking for Everyday Life for McGraw-Hill. Call Rita Girard at 508-999-9182 or rgirard@umassd.edu to register. |
