Chemistry & Biochemistry Department

Financial Support

The Department normally provides support for the qualified student. Assistantships, however, are limited. Therefore, persons interested in such support are encouraged to apply early. Teaching assistantships carry stipends of $13,000 for nine academic months and a waiver of tuition. Students making satisfactory progress toward the degree are eligible for teaching assistantship support for up to five semesters in the Master's program and up to twelve semesters in one of the doctoral programs.

An additional summer research fellowship may be awarded to students in good standing who are working on a research thesis. Students may be supported by Research Assistantships by faculty members holding research grants.

A student holding an assistantship must be registered for 9 credits per semester. A Teaching Assistant is expected to assist faculty in teaching, on the average, for 15-20 hours per week. This may involve 2-3 laboratory sections, grading, laboratory preparation, meeting with students, and staff meetings.
