Pre-Med Preparation

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry has a long tradition of sending students to professional schools in medical fields. This includes students who went on to obtain M.D. as well as D.O. degrees. Many students have moved on to pursue Pharm.D. degrees, veterinary degrees and dental degrees. Recent placements include UMass Medical School, Tufts University School of Medicine, University of Michigan, Nova Southeastern School of Medicine, and Mass College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Pre-Med Curriculum

The biochemistry option is excellent preparation for professional (pre-Medical, pre-Pharmacy, pre-Veterinary) schools offering M.D., D.O., D.V.M. and PharmD degrees. Students who are highly motivated to do medical research may also pursue an M.D.-Ph.D. The standard curriculum of a biochemistry major includes all courses required and recommended by medical schools in the United States. Students will also take these classes at the highest level offered on campus, which is preferred for medical school admissions. All premedical students need to have their degree programs approved by the Premedical Faculty Advisor to make sure that they will satisfy the pre-requisites of the professional schools to which they plan to apply.

Special Opportunities

All students in Chemistry & Biochemistry are required to perform one research intensive semester as part of the degree. Most of our students begin research in either their sophomore or junior year and continue through graduation, with 25 undergraduate students working in the lab over the past year. Research experience is strongly recommended to strengthen graduate and medical school applications. Our pre-medical students often participate in summer programs at medical schools; current seniors conducted research in medical labs at UMass Medical, Tufts, NYU, and Yale.
