Presented by: Jason Hill, MPP Candidate 2013
Abstract:
I designed this event to be an interactive conversation about urban land use with a panel of representatives from the cities of New Bedford and Fall River. I began our conversation with a brief lecture about the factors contributing to vacant and abandoned parcels in urban settings, as well as a quick overview of the importance and relevance of addressing these issues in the urban SouthCoast. My lecture was followed by presentations by city officials from New Bedford and Fall River concerning the challenges, strategies, and opportunities that vacant and abandoned parcels can offer these cities in revitalization efforts. After the presentations, I facilitated a solutions-based conversation with audience members, giving attendees the opportunity to comment, ask questions, and learn how to become involved, while also enabling city representatives to ask questions and solicit feedback. Considering the responsibility of this University to engage and support our surrounding communities, I think this event provided a great venue for our neighboring cities to explore opportunities to collaborate with each other, other non-governmental organizations, and active members of the community.
