Bio: Janet Gardner earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California State University at Sacramento and, after a brief stint studying in England, her PhD from UMass Amherst. Since arriving at UMD in 1995, she has taught a wide variety of classes in both writing and literature, and from 2003-2006 she served as director of the University Honors Program.
Her research interests include contemporary drama, especially the works of British playwright Caryl Churchill, and she has published a number of articles and book chapters in this field and delivered papers on the topic at conferences including the Modern Language Association Convention and the National Symposium on Theater in Academe. Her work on issues of pedagogy has also yielded a number of publications and conference presentations. She is the writer/editor of two textbooks, 12 Plays: A Portable Anthology and Writing About Literature: A Portable Guide (both from Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2003) and contributor to a third volume in the series, Literature: A Portable Anthology. She is currently at work on a book-length project on the teaching of drama and theater in American higher education.
