Bio: Before becoming a professor of English, James Marlow has worked as a common laborer, a baseball coach, a retailer, and as a bond underwriter, as well as serving in the U.S. Army.

A graduate of Dartmouth College, he was honored as Class Poet, and won the Golden Gloves light-heavyweight championship of New Hampshire. He earned his PhD from the University of California, Davis. After teaching at the College of William and Mary while he finished his dissertation on Charles Dickens, he came to UMD in 1973.

He married Corinne Thomas in 1988, and they enjoy a complex, modern network of family relationships that defy belief.

His primary academic publications have focused on the novels and journalism of Charles Dickens. Besides a dozen or so articles, his book Charles Dickens: The Uses of Time was published in 1994. Besides the occasional Dickens seminar and courses in the Victorian period, his primary teaching interests are in the history of theater, playwriting, and many of the aspects of semiotic analysis, including theater and advertising.
