Program Objectives

  • Introduce students to academic and other kinds of writing.
  • Teach students strategies for critical writing and reading.
  • Encourage writing as a mode of thinking, learning, and communicating.
  • Give students practice in the processes of writing, including brainstorming, drafting, revising, and proofreading.
  • Introduce students to the rhetorical conventions of different kinds of writing.
  • Help students understand the importance of rhetorical purpose and context in writing, and to encourage them to write in forms and use conventions appropriate to those purposes and contexts.
  • Teach students how to articulate, develop, and sustain arguments in academic writing.
  • Teach students how to organize and support their ideas through writing.
  • Give students the skills and language to respond critically to their own writing and to the writing of their peers.
  • Encourage collaborative meaning making and critical thinking through class discussions and writing about texts of various kinds.
  • Teach students the basics of computer literacy and the use of web resources for research, reading, and writing.
  • Introduce students to library and other informational databases.
  • Teach students the conventions of research, including methods of citing sources.
  • Help students hone their proofreading skills and to edit for grammar, punctuation, syntax.
