The program's goal is to provide rapid transition to new skills with special emphasis on practical course work tailored to your work setting, situation, and community. The 12-credit Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing helps professionals and business people enhance their skills and credentials in professional writing.

The Certificate Program is a curricular subset of the M.A. in Professional Writing Program (MPW). As such, students in the Certificate Program take MPW courses taught by MPW faculty. And they select courses in any one of the following areas:

  • technical writing
  • business writing
  • public relations
  • journalism
  • grant writing
  • electronic publishing

The Certificate program is designed to help you prepare for:

  • promotion
  • career change
  • specialty change within current organizations
  • new opportunities in free-lance work, editing, and consulting.

The specific program goals include:

  • developing and expanding writing skills demanded in professional settings and the larger publishing world
  • providing hands-on instruction in new technologies such as Web development and desktop publishing
  • building awareness of audience, markets, and current standards of publishing professionalism
  • developing practical strategies for purposeful, effective communications that fit specific circumstances and client needs
  • writing for publication and distribution in real professional contexts
