Drama, Film, and Media Studies

A student in the Drama, Film, and Media Studies Option of the English Major examines texts and ideas in historical, formal, cultural, theoretical, and other contexts, with a particular emphasis on text from the world's drama and film traditions. The program develops the student's general knowledge of drama and film in such contexts and requires focused study of specific artists and works. Areas of study include the traditional genres of drama and film, drama and film history, literature and literary criticism, and hands-on work in the creation of drama and film projects. As with every option of the English Major, the option in Drama/Film and Media Studies develops students' abilities to think critically and communicate effectively for a range of purposes and in a variety of formats. Formats include literary analysis (especially as applied to drama and film), persuasive argument, critical exposition, and oral presentation.

Drama and Film students focus on the studies of history and theory, students will capture the meaning and the power of two performing arts - film and theater - and develop responsibility and attitude towards what they are doing and what they will be doing. From the systematic and practical training, they will acquire the proficiency to speak these physical and visual languages. The ability required to study this program is not only aesthetic creativity but also cooperative sensibility. This program emphasizes the collaboration and harmony.

Drama, Film, and Media Studies candidates will master analytical approaches to and historical development of dramatic literature and film as well as their relationship to the development of other genres. In addition, they will learn to create effective written work in the form of reviews, critical essays, and stage or screenplays. Although this option will concentrate on courses in literature and writing, students are encouraged to participate in theater and/or film production and to arrange an appropriate off-campus applied internship.

Students with a Drama, Film, and Media Studies degree have gone into filmmaking, the film and television industries, arts organizations, university and school teaching, local government and business. There are many career opportunities in film-related jobs such as film distribution, film festivals, the promotional aspects of film culture, review writing, and writing for the stage and screen.
