Facilities

State of the art equipment and methods are used in all medical laboratory science laboratories. Equipment which students use include: spectrophotometers, computer controlled semi-automated chemistry analyzers, urinalysis instruments, hematology cell counters, rapid microorganism identification instruments, microscopes which allow multiple users, and microscopes equipped with video cameras and monitors.

First year courses such as Human Genetics and Fundamentals of Medical Laboratory Science share a common laboratory with a sophomore Pathophysiology course and a junior year Immunobiology course. Both the freshman and sophomore courses include the microscopic evaluation of blood and body fluids.

The Microbiology laboratory implements classical, automated and molecular methods for identification for bacteria, fungi and parasites.

The Hematology/Immunohematory laboratory provides experiences for two different disciplines. The Hematology courses use bright light and phase contrast microscopy as well as computerized cell counting and sorting using multiple laser technology. The Immunohematology courses employ classical and gel technologies used in transfusion services.

The chemistry laboratory used in Clinical Instrumentation Analysis and Clinical Biochemistry balances both classical manual methods with current instrumentation.
