Graduate School Opportunities

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) actively participates in the multi-campus, multi-disciplinary Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology PhD program, with a master's degree option. This innovative program recognizes the industry need for biomedical scientists and engineers to work together and have a fundamental understanding of each other's disciplines.

Program Overview

The graduate program includes a set of core courses, taken by students with undergraduate degrees in engineering and life sciences, including students from both the CLS and Biotechnology options offered by the MLS department. These core courses are designed to provide students with a common basis of knowledge and encourage interdisciplinary research collaboration.

In addition to the UMass Dartmouth campus, students in this graduate program may take courses at our sister campuses of UMass Lowell, UMass Worcester, and UMass Boston, and enjoy shared library resources, such as those found at the impressive Lamar-Soutter Library at UMass Medical. This sharing of resources provides a much greater opportunity for graduate students well beyond the scope of each individual campus and provides a mechanism for students to expand their professional networking capabilities.

Once students have completed the core courses, they can select a number of different specialty tracks, including several in Medical Laboratory Science. Consideration is given to practicing clinical laboratory scientists, since they often already possess the skills considered important to biotechnology. Students with graduate degrees from other accredited institutions may be given advanced standing towards the PhD field of study, once they've identified their area of research interest and selected their specialty track.
