Professor Baum is a specialist in comparative politics. He is an Executive Board Member of the University's Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture, and co-chair of the Iberian Study Group at Harvard University's Center for European Studies. Baum is the author of Uma cultura de participação? A política do pós-Reforma Agrária no Alentejo (under contract with ICS Press, Univ. of Lisbon) and he is also editing a volume for Lexington Books, Civil Society After Democratization: Reflections on 30 Years of Portuguese DemocracyHe has published articles in the European Journal of Political Research, South European Society and Politics, and various other journals.  Prof. Baum recently coauthored a chapter entitled "Exploring the Gender Gap in Portugal: Women's Participation" which was published in the book Portugal at the Polls in 2002 (Lexington Books).
