Professor Baum is a specialist in comparative politics. He is an Executive Board Member of the University's Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture, and co-chair of the Iberian Study Group at Harvard University's Center for European Studies. Baum is the author of Uma cultura de participação? A política do pós-Reforma Agrária no Alentejo (under contract with ICS Press, Univ. of Lisbon) and he is also editing a volume for Lexington Books, Civil Society After Democratization: Reflections on 30 Years of Portuguese Democracy. He has published articles in the European Journal of Political Research, South European Society and Politics, and various other journals.  Prof. Baum recently coauthored a chapter entitled "Exploring the Gender Gap in Portugal: Women's Participation" which was published in the book Portugal at the Polls in 2002 (Lexington Books).
