Professor Baum is a specialist in comparative politics. He is an Executive Board Member of the University's Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture, co-chair of the Iberian Study Group at Harvard University's Center for European Studies, and he serves as the director of the new UMass in Lisbon study abroad program, which he directs for the UMass system. Baum is co-editing (with Miguel Glatzer) a volume for Lexington Books, the working title of which is Civil Society After Democratization: The Quality of Portuguese Democracy Today. His research has been published in West European Politics, the European Journal of Political Research, South European Society and Politics, and various other journal articles and book chapters, in both Portuguese and English.
