Department of Portuguese

:: About Us

The department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Portuguese, as well as a Portuguese minor (see Programs for specific degree requirements). In addition to required and elective courses within the department, students are encouraged to take advantage of course offerings related to the Portuguese-speaking world in the departments of Art History, History, Political Science, and Sociology/Anthropology. Furthermore, the Helio and Amelia Pedroso/Luso-American Foundation Endowed Chair in Portuguese Studies, created in 2001, allows the Department of Portuguese to invite distinguished visiting professors from around the world to teach and do research at UMass Dartmouth.

The Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture, founded in 1996, supports the department by organizing a variety of cultural events throughout the year, including lectures, exhibitions, concerts and colloquia. The Center also publishes three book series and a semiannual academic journal Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies.
