Dário Borim's Home Page

 

borimDário Borim is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Portuguese at UMass Dartmouth. He is also translator, creative writer, concert producer, and radio programmer at WUMD. He holds a BA in languages from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, two MAs, in creative writing and Luso-Brazilian literature, and a Ph.D. in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian literature and linguistics from University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in the Portuguese language, Luso-Brazilian literature, cinema, theater, and music. His book Perplexidades: Raça, sexo e outras questões sociopolíticas no discurso cultural brasileiro was published in 2004 by EdUFF (Rio de Janeiro). Borim's essays and translations have appeared in prestigious anthologies, such as Poéticas da diversidade, by Ed. UFMG, Bodies and Biases: Issues of Sexualities in Hispanic Cultures,  by Univ. of Minn. Press, and Latin American Writers on  Gay  and Lesbian Themes, by Greenwood Press. His writings have been included in fifteen peer-reviewed periodicals from Brazil, France, Peru, and the U.S.: Aletria, Brasil/Brazil, Chasqui, ComTextos, Ellipsis, Hispania, The Luso-Brazilian Review, Lusotopie, Portuguese Literary and Cultural Studies, Revista de Crítica Literaria Latinoamericana, Revista Estudos Feministas, Revista Letras, Projeto História, Quadrant and Transit Circle. While mainly adopting a socio-historical approach, Borim's academic publications discuss a wide list of genres, topics, and authors, including the works of Gloria Anzaldua, Machado de Assis, Manuel Bandeira, Herbert Daniel, Fernando Gabeira, Bernardo Guimarães, Adrienne Kennedy, Eliane Maciel, Rigoberta Menchú, José Lins do Rego, Nelson Rodrigues, Sérgio Sant'Anna, Vera Sant'Anna, Piri Thomas, Caetano Veloso, and Malcolm X. Borim has also served as a copyeditor for Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies and as a manuscript reviewer for Colonial Latin American Historical Review, Latin American Research Review, The Luso-Brazilian Review, and Mediterranean Studies.

As a creative writer Borim writes a biweekly column in O Jornal Brasileiro, also available in his blog at www.drborim.blogspot.com. He has published a book of memoirs and cultural commentaries (Paisagens humanas: Crônicas de Paraguaçu e desse mundo afora, Papiro 2002). He has contributed short stories, apart from personal and critical essays on cultural and political themes, in Brava gente brasileira em terras estrangeiras (Scortecci, 2005), as well as in various magazines and newspapers from California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Wyoming, and his native Minas Gerais, such as The Brasilians, The Brazilian Times, Brazzil, Estado de Minas, O Jornal, The Minnesota Daily, and The Standard-Times. In July 2004 Borim adapted and directed Dias Gomes' play O pagador de promessas. In September 2004, he was the producer, general director, lecturer, and host of a multimedia tribute to Ary Barroso, including film, lecture, live music, and theater, at Harvard University and U-Mass Dartmouth. He has also produced concerts by pop and folk music stars, including Armandinho (from Bahia), Trio Carcoarco (from São Paulo), plus Samito Matsinhe and Stewart Sukuma (from Mozambique). Other featured artists have been the acclaimed classical musicians Maria José Carrasqueira, Jaime and Odette Ernest Dias, and Wendy Rolfe. Since December 2001, Prof. Borim has produced, engineered, and hosted Brazilliance, weekly live radio program dedicated to the music of Brazil and other lusophone countries on WUMD, North Dartmouth (89.3 FM).
