Frank Sousa's Home Page

sousaFrank F. Sousa holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1992). He is  a Full Professor of Portuguese and Spanish at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the founder and first Chair of the Department of Portuguese (2000-2002). He is also the founder and director of both the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture (1996) and the Summer Program in Portuguese (1994). In addition, he proposed and directed the campaign that led to the establishment of the Hélio and Amélia Pedroso/Luso-American Foundation Endowed Chair in Portuguese Studies (2001). Prof. Sousa is the author of O Segredo de Eça (Lisbon, Edições Cosmos, 1996) and is currently preparing a critical edition of the novel A cidade e as serras by Eça de Queirós to be published by Imprensa Nacional–Casa da Moeda. He is the Director and co-founder of the academic journal Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies (1998), and the General Editor of the Portuguese in the Americas Series (2003). He has twice been a Fulbright Scholar at the Biblioteca Nacional in Lisbon (1989-90 and 1995). In 1997 Prof. Sousa was awarded the Comenda da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, one of the highest honors bestowed upon an individual by the Government of Portugal.
