This study tested a theatre workshop training program designed to increase self confidence and self esteem in grade school children. One hundred thirty two students from grade K through 8 participated. Before and after the 12 week workshop program, students were videotaped on stage in a simulated social situation. These video tapes were subsequently rated by trained research assistants on three "behavioral" dimensions: 1) appropriate eye contact, 2) social anxiety, and 3) social skill. Parents also completed a questionnaire designed to assess perceptions of changes in their children's self confidence. The results of the behavioral data all showed highly significant results. At the end of the program, students showed improved self confidence as reflected in improved eye contact. They were also less anxious (social anxiety) and more socially effective (social skill). Data for the parent surveys showed an overwhelming perception of improved self-confidence.
