Hope Dialogue

"Following the murder of a UMass freshman last fall, community leaders in New Bedford gathered to discuss how they might coordinate their efforts to significantly impact the violence in the city. The group chose to implement two programs. The first, a public relations safety campaign, focuses on media relations and providing art and other projects for city teens. The second ‘pilot’ project is based on a similar effort in Harlem: It focuses on a specific area of the city and brings the resources of the community in a concentrated way to the children, families, and wage earners in that area..."

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is committed to fostering an ethic of service on campus. We believe through participation in quality service activities our students, faculty and staff make a significant contribution to our community, find meaningful extra-curricular activity and develop an increased sense of civic responsibility.

The community service / civic engagement program coordinates community service and service-learning opportunities for students, faculty and staff. The program develops training and resources for community service activities such as the annual community service fair and alternative spring break opportunities.

Largest Estuaries Project in Commonwealth History Nears Halfway Point

“The Estuaries Project has completed two years of analyzing the estuarine water quality problem,” says Andrew Gottlieb, Deputy Secretary of the Office for Commonwealth Development, “and everybody should take some comfort in the fact that the technical reports are showing that the problem is manageable.”

Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center

Labor Education Center

The Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center was established in 1975 to meet the educational needs of workers as members and leaders in the labor movement and as active and responsible citizens in the community. The objectives of the Labor Education Center are:

  • To provide non-credit courses, conferences, seminars and special programs in labor education to workers and unions;
  • To offer support and consultation to labor organizations in the development and delivery of their own educational programs;
  • To provide technical and informational resources to workers and unions;
  • To integrate the concerns and contributions of labor into the curricula and activities of the University;
  • To serve as a liaison and promote cooperation between the University and labor organizations, and to increase utilization of the University's resources by workers and unions;
  • To promote greater awareness in the community of the history and present situation of workers and labor organization;
  • To design and develop credit courses and a degree program in Labor Studies.
  • To promote greater understanding and cooperation between labor and business, religious, environmental, and other civic and community organizations.

Center for University, School and Community Partnerships

Established in 1984 as the Massachusetts Field Center for Teaching and Learning, the Center for University, School and Community Partnerships provides high quality professional learning experiences for beginning and experienced K-12 teachers to strengthen their content knowledge, broaden their teaching practices and curricula, and acquire leadership skills necessary to improve schools and student achievement.

The Center offers opportunities for the professional growth of teachers by: organizing mentoring and induction institutes; sponsoring conferences, forums, grant programs, and publications on current educational issues; promoting teacher leadership and professional collaboration through networks; and serving as a clearinghouse of educational resources and research. The Center draws on the expertise and experience of outstanding teachers to inform its programs, school reform initiatives and educational policy.

Housed at the New Bedford Center for Professional and Continuing Education, the Center's current projects include "Visions of Slavery and Freedom" and "Connecting Oceans Academy."

Center for Business Research

The Center for Business Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, is a unique and affordable business assistance center located in the Charlton College of Business. The Center is dedicated to facilitating the growth of the region's businesses by providing an economic alternative for meeting business needs for research, training and consulting in the areas of Accounting and Finance, Information Systems, Management, and Marketing. Through the Center, businesses can secure direct access to the full resources of the University, expertise of the Charlton College of Business faculty, and assistance from selected faculty-supervised business students.

The Center for Business Research is associated with and maintains a close relationship with the Chambers of Commerce within southeastern Massachusetts. This unique relationship provides the Center with an effective business networking capability.

Center for Policy Analysis

Recent UMass Presidential Service Award Recipient Clyde Barrow directs the Center for Policy Analysis. Established in 1985 as a multidisciplinary research unit dedicated to the creation and dissemination of knowledge that facilitates economic, social, and political development. The Center for Policy Analysis aims to enhance the economic and social well-being of citizens by providing research, information, and technical assistance to government, business, non-profit, and educational agencies.
