- When should Libarl Arts Undeclared (LAU) or Business Undeclared students come to see us?
- Does the Counseling Center offer in-class services?

We're right above admissions, more or less between Group I and the Auditorium.
What are our times of operation?
We are open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.
We have walk-in hours from 12:30 to 2 pm, when clients can be seen without an appointment. We make a point of getting people in for a routine first consultation within 2 or 3 days. Emergency situations will be seen that same day. All of our staff and interns have brief biographies on our website. We have a good-sized self-help library and lots of information on graduate and professional schools.
Our phone number is 999-8650.
| How can you positively describe us? |
Please remind students that services are free and confidential. Our records are COMPLETELY separate from other university records which means that Professors, ResLife staff, parents, etc. will only know they use our services if the student chooses to tell them. We're into fast-paced, short-term treatment focused on being happy and successful as a college student.
When should Liberal Arts Undeclared (LAU) or Business Undeclared students come to see us?
We encourage you to send LAU and Business Undeclared majors to us sooner rather than later for career interest testing and help in choosing a major.
Does the Counseling Center offer in-class service?
Yes, we will do a workshop for your class if you need to be away or even if you just think your class would benefit. We need about two weeks advance notice and reserve the right to refuse if we are unable at the time. We routinely do workshops on
- time and motivation management,
- stress management,
- teamwork,
- communication skills,
- managing performance anxiety,
- memory skills, and
- improving performance on multiple choice tests.
We are open to putting something together on other topics, so if you have an idea or see a need, please ask.
| Are you available for consultation? |
We provide a lot of consultation to faculty on a variety of topics and situations. We're a good place to talk to someone, confidentially, either in person or by phone, to clarify your concerns about a particular student or situation and explore options for responding.
We are available to meet with faculty and staff who have personal, family or work related issues and would like referrals to community providers.
Do you offer any volunteer opportunities for students?
Our director, Christine Frizzell, is a co-founder of UMass Dartmouth Southcoast Compeer, a local chapter of Compeer International, an organization whose mission is to provide trained volunteer friends and mentors to persons with mental illness. Students can participate in Compeer either as volunteers or for 1 experiential learning credit (in psychology or nursing) per semester.
If you advise pre-med, pre-law, sociology, nursing, psychology or criminal justice students, please suggest they check out Compeer. Student participants tell us it is the nicest part of their week and it is an excellent resume builder and/or fodder for a great essay for grad school, med school or law school. Compeer's advisory board is looking for additional members and would welcome your involvement. Chris frequently sells plants and flowers to raise funds for Compeer, so check out the wall outside the Counseling Center during the spring and fall.
