Welcome New Lecturers!
The New Faculty Institute welcomes you to UMass Dartmouth! This Web site is available to new full-time lecturers (FTLs) and part-time lecturers (PTLs), as well as tenure-track faculty. Although the primary focus of the NFI and this Web site is to help usher junior tenure-track faculty through their first year and the tenure process, much of the information shown on this site will be of use to you as lecturers. Please explore the site and keep in mind that there are ways in which the material can help you.
Starting Up: Pay attention to this section of the site!
Getting Connected: Some of these items may be of use early on, particularly to FTLs, some will be useful later on depending on the paths you follow at UMass Dartmouth.
Teaching and Advising: All lecturers teach, and a variety of resources are available on campus to help you develop your teaching skills. Although not all resources will be available to you, many are and it’s always worth asking if you aren’t sure. FTLs usually are asked to carry a full advising load as well as teach. Many PTLs and FTLs find themselves in need of services to which they can refer students. The Center for Teaching Excellence is for everyone. You’ll find all this and much more in this section.
Planning for Tenure: Although lecturers are not eligible for tenure, there are some useful pieces of advice in this section for both FTLs and PTLs. FTLs are evaluated in the same categories as tenure-track professors, although to a lesser extent, and this section can help orient you in that area. In addition, all faculty receive annual evaluations, although, again, to a lesser extent in the case of lecturers. This section includes advice on how to keep track of teaching effectiveness.
