Dr. Sharon Sousa is exploring isolation of a genetic basis for bipolar disorders; she is one of only 16 nurses nationwide participating in a National Institute of Mental Health initiative on psychiatric nurse researchers.
Dr. Catherine Neto, chemistry professor, is the principal investigator on a preliminary study which suggests that cranberries can reduce the damage a stroke can cause to brain cells.

Methods of Enhancing Dyeability of Polymers
"This invention relates to methods of dyeing polymers, more specifically, methods of enhancing the dyeability of polymers..."
This patent, which is based on work done at UMass Dartmouth and funded by the National Textile Center, was created by Profs. Fan, Ugbolue and Wilson; Mr. Yang was the student on the project.
Because of Polypropylene's pure hydrocarbon structure it is a tough, water resistant fiber making it excellent for use in outdoor carpeting. However, these same qualities make Polypropylene exceptionally unreactive and equally difficult to dye, resulting in dull colors. The invention adds nanoparticle clay or silica to the polypropylene providing an attachment site for dye. Since nanoparticles are only a few atoms across, they have a very high surface area. Hence a small percentage of particles provides enough area to bind dye and brightly color the fiber.
School of Marine Sciences and Technology
Armed with a free-swimming submersible robot, a University of Massachusetts Dartmouth oceanographer at the School of Marine Sciences and Technology (SMAST) is embarking on a three-year study of the elusive relationship between small-scale water movements and small-scale ocean life.
Funded by the Office of Naval Research, SMAST Professor Louis Goodman and his collaborators will be participating in the Navy's $9 million LOCO Program field experiments. 'LOCO' stands for Layered Organization in the Coastal Ocean, a phenomenon recently discovered in near-shore environments.
| Brian Glyn Williams, assistant
professor of history, made a harrowing journey across the Middle East
in 2003 to interview and live for two weeks with the Northern Alliance's
Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum. Working with university videograpgher Heather
Tripp, Williams produced Dostum: An Afghan Warlord's War on Terror, a
documentary that weaves together together combat footage shot by Dostum
during his destruction of the Taliban in November 2001, Williams' footage
of Afghanistan, photographs taken by Williams and by Dostum's warriors,
as well as maps of the area and background footage. The film debuted to
rave reviews in New York at the annual convention of the International
Association for the Study of Nationalities, and Williams had has requests
for copies of the documentary from around the world. Read the Story Here! (PDF) |

The
Partnership For Innovation (PFI) project, funded by the National Science Foundation
is operated by ATMC
through
a series of partnerships with state and federal agencies and private sector
companies. The goal is to develop innovative new technologies that will be transferred
to existing industries and new start-up businesses. The main focus will be research
conducted by UMass Dartmouth faculty members and undergraduate and graduate
students in newly developed laboratories at the ATMC and at the university's
main campus.

Jim Griffith and his colleagues in Med Lab Science working in partnership with SNESL, continuing education and related state agencies have established a Center for Molecular Diagnostics to advance the work of clinical, forensic and environmental professionals. |
UMass Dartmouth librarian Bruce Barnes has created a web site about the important but rare "stick style" architecture. The site features photographs, history, and detailed bibliographic references about this American Victorian style dating from 1860-1890.
Dan Georgianna produced The Atlantic Pearl, a chronicle of the work done by SMAST Professor Kevin Stokesbury. View the Atlantic Pearl:
