Office of the Chancellor

Good Morning UMass Dartmouth!

As many of you know, we have embarked on an exciting mission to transform the Claire T. Carney Library into a 21st century intellectual engine, and many people throughout the community are stepping up to the plate to support this bold endeavor.

Next Tuesday, at 3:30 p.m. in Group II-228, our architects and our facilities team will meet with the Faculty Senate to present their vision of how the library space can be modernized to foster a community of scholars, encourage innovative teaching and learning, support research that matters to our region and Commonwealth, and sustain important cultural archives that celebrate our collective history and culture.

Please join the dialogue to offer your own ideas about the architects’ program and design concept.

Meanwhile, just to get you in the mood for the Faculty Senate meeting, check out “The Heart of Knowledge,” a video produced by 1974 alumnus Ron Gamache, which was first shown at our October 14 Blue & Gold Gala. That night we announced the naming of the library and $3 million in private gifts.

You may also be interested in watching Claire Carney’s speech following the dedication of the library in her name. Her dedication to learning is truly inspiring.

On November 7 our campus made history by hosting the final debate of the 2006 Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign. This was a proud moment for our campus and our region, and shined a powerful spotlight on the issues that matter most to us.

Democrat Deval Patrick, Republican Kerry Healey, Independent Christy Mihos, and Green-Rainbow Party candidate Grace Ross differed on many issues during their dialogue, but they also showed that they had something in common. They each made the courageous decision to run for public office, place their philosophy and ideas before us for inspection and criticism. They took the risk of leading and serving, and in doing so set an example for us all.

I want to thank all those who made the debate possible, especially the staff of the university which worked many long hours preparing the auditorium for the event, and in doing so displaying the best of UMass Dartmouth.

Finally, congratulations to all of our fall athletes and teams who have once again superbly represented our campus throughout the region, and don’t forget that tonight is the opening of the hockey season and will feature the raising of the ECAC Northeast Championship banner. Go Corsairs!

Yours sincerely,

Jean MacCormack

Chancellor
