International Conference on Sustainable Business Development (ICSBD 2010)

June 14-16, 2010
University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth

Conference Announcement / Call for Papers

Conference Theme

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:

  1. The concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given;
  2. The idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs.

The profession of management is increasingly interested in sustainable development as today's organizations confront the realities of managing limited resources, many of which were previously considered to be unlimited in scope.

Economic meltdowns, environmental degradation, and social unrest indicate that business as usual is no longer an option. Exploitation of resources has to be replaced with ecological stewardship that creates long-term wealth and well being. In this next stage of business evolution, irresponsible Industrial production will be replaced by sustainable exchanges that help maintain and enhance the environment, social structures, and prosperity. Enterprises will need to offer products and services that fulfill society's needs while contributing to the well-being of all. The conference schedule will include academic papers and contributions from industry. The conference is designed to seek practitioners' knowledge and opinions, and encourage theory being informed by practice.
