Decision and Information Sciences Department
The Department of Decision and Information Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate programs in operations management and management information systems. Our curriculum has been constantly updated with new courses to match the needs of the changing market and enterprise environments. The primary objective of DIS is to provide quality teaching and conduct scholarly research to advance the state of knowledge in operations management and information systems.
Operations Management is a growing and rapidly evolving area of employment being shaped by international competition. If resources - people, money, machinery, facilities, material and information - are to be used wisely, operations management personnel must be familiar with computer technology, quantitative methods, and planning and problem-solving techniques useful in analyzing business systems. Operations management personnel must also have computer and analytical skills, keep abreast of current technology and know when to incorporate new technology into their organization. In addition, they need excellent communication skills to work with everyone from those on the assembly line to those in top management. The Operations Management major seeks to enable undergraduate management students to gain the requisite understanding of management concepts and to acquire the appropriate application skills to function creatively, flexibly and successfully in private or public, domestic, and global organizations of any size. The Operations Management program is accredited by AACSB - The International Association for Management Education. Students learn techniques applicable to both production environments and to service-providing organizations. These techniques result in effective and efficient management of the supply chain from vendors to customers.
The Management Information Systems program of study is designed to prepare students for one of the most rapidly expanding professions in the business world. MIS prepares the student both to analyze an organization's information systems structure and to design and implement that system. This major offers a broad educational experience in business, computer applications, the humanities, and social sciences. The primary emphasis of the MIS program is the application of the "systems approach" to business problem-solving and decision-making. Analysis of both on-campus and off-campus "real-life" business systems provides students with practical experience and increases their value in the professional career market. Management Information Systems majors differ from computer science majors in emphasizing applications of computer systems over their development and analysis. The applications are focused on complex business needs in organizations. MIS majors conceptualize, design, and implement high quality business systems and build bridges between technical realities, organizational functions, and decision-making by managers. The Management Information Systems program is accredited by AACSB - The International Association for Management Education.
