Getting Started with myCourses

The Getting Started with myCourses Workshop is for faculty wishing to use myCourses as a web supplement for their face-to-face class. This workshop will be offered several times each semester and we estimate it will require a 2-3 hour commitment by faculty, and less time for those faculty with prior LMS experience. This is an online, asynchronous workshop, therefore you can move through the workshop at your own pace. However, you will need to complete the workshop by the end date of the workshop. Workshop participants also have access to 2 hour face-to-face (f2f) session if needed. This training is required to ensure that faculty will be able to demonstrate their proficiency in the learning management system and are self-sufficient users of the LMS.

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of developing a course site and managing your course with the myCourses platform. Since you are a student in this workshop, you will experience firsthand what it is like to navigate through a course, post to a discussion board, and take an online quiz. This experience as an online learner will help you with your second role as a Designer/Teacher in your own course as you will understand more fully how a student “sees” a course site and what issues can arise during the online learning process. As a Teacher/Designer, you will organize, build and teach your courses. Throughout the workshop there are a series of activities that will give you an opportunity to begin building your course site, upload files, and use some of the available myCourses tools utilizing the playground site that is located on the myCourses portal course listing area.

Course Objectives

By the end of this workshop, you will:

  • Know how to prepare and upload your materials into the myCourses platform.
  • Know how to organize your course content.
  • Be able to use basic communications tools such as course discussions and email.
  • Understand the various teaching and course management tools available in myCourses.
  • Be a self-sufficient user of the myCourses platform.

Advanced: Blended/Fully Online Training

In this training course, we will introduce you to the current research in best practices for blended and online teaching as well as showcase examples of successful blended and online teaching strategies. Training participants will develop a course development plan and template; in addition, the course will teach faculty how to self-assess course site design so to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate student learning. The Online Teaching and Learning Strategies training course is a self paced, asynchronous workshop facilitated by the Instructional Development team, therefore you can move through the training at your own pace. The training will be open for 5 days and we estimate the training will require 4-6 hours of your time. Training participants will also have access to face-to-face (f2f) sessions and individual consultation sessions if needed.

Course Objectives

By the end of this training, you will:

  • Be introduced to current research in best practices for blended and online teaching
  • View examples of successful blended and online teaching strategies
  • Develop a course plan and template
  • Learn how to self-assess course site design so to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate student learning
