Troubleshooting Tips

Pop-Up Blocker Applications

If you are unable to view email messages, discussion postings, or download links, then you will need to disable any pop-up blocking applications. Pop up blocker software can exist in your browser's toolbar or as part of your anti virus software. For further information on disabling these applications, please visit the Browser Tune-up page.

Spyware Issues

If you are being redirected to another website when you try to login to myCourses, often the culprit is a spyware or adware program on your computer. We recommend that you download and install one of the following programs to check and remove unwanted spyware from your computer.

Lavasoft Ad-aware, and/or
Spybot - Search & Destroy from PepiMK Software

Downloading files from myCourses

If you use Internet Explorer, you may experience problems accessing and downloading files in the myCourse system.

Changing Your Browser's Security Settings

If you would like to eliminate the security banner warning from appearing in IE when logged into myCourses, follow the instructions below.

A permanent solution is to set myCourses server url address, http://learning.umassonline.net as a trusted site in your browser settings.
Many thanks to UMass Dartmouth Professor Robert Darst for providing the following instructions.

1. On the Internet Explorer toolbar, go to Tools > Internet Options > Security.

2. Click "Trusted Sites" and then "Sites." A new window, "Trusted Sites" will open.

3. Click the text box labeled "Add this Web site to the zone" Copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following web address, http://learning.umassonline.net into the text box.

4. Do not check the box labeled "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone." If it is checked, uncheck it.

5. Click "OK." You will be returned to the "Security" tab.

6. Now you need to make sure that the security level for "Trusted Sites" is set to the correct default level. At the bottom of the "Security" tab, click "Custom Level." A new window, "Security Settings," will open.

7. At the bottom of the "Security Settings" window, select "Medium-Low" or "Low" in the "Reset to" drop list and click "Reset."

8. You will receive a "Warning!" asking, "Are you sure you want to change the security setting for this zone?" Click "Yes" and then "OK." (In all likelihood, you will not be changing anything, since "Low" is already the default setting for this zone.)

9. Click "Apply" and "OK." Log out of myCourses.

10. When you next log in, you will receive this warning from Internet Explorer: "The current web site is trying to open a site in your Trusted sites list. Do you want to allow this?" Answer "Yes," and you will enter myCourses.

11. If you wish to prevent this warning from popping up each time you log in, simply add the login page (http://learning.umassonline.net/) to your list of Trusted Sites, using steps 1-6 and 10 outlined above.
