Security

Network and computer security is critical to maintaining the integrity of the university campus network. A single compromised machine can cause connectivity issues for the entire network. Therefore, the university requires that all computers attached to the network be secure and free of any viruses. Any computer found to be infected will be quarantined from the network until the virus is removed and the machine is given a clean bill of health. Students are responsible for maintaining their own machines.

Virus Protection

The University of Massachusetts policy states that every computer that is connected to the campus network is required to have anti-virus software installed and continuously enabled with up-to-date virus definitions. Faculty and staff members who do not have anti-virus software or think their computers may be infected should contact the IT Service Center at x8790.

Students have the ability to download and install a university licensed copy of Symantec Anti-Virus by downloading it at http://netreg.umassd.edu. Students who believe their computers may be infected with a virus should call the ResTech Center at ext. 8040.

Personal Desktop Firewall

Although it is not required, the university strongly suggests running a personal desktop firewall on your computer. Some operating systems such as Windows XP come with a built in firewall. The university has purchased licenses for a desktop firewall called Proventia Desktop (formerly, RealSecure Desktop Protector) to cover all the faculty, staff and students at the university.

Faculty and staff who wish to have the Proventia Desktop firewall installed on their computer should contact the IT Service Center at x8790.

Students can download a copy of the Proventia Desktop firewall by logging in at http://netreg.umassd.edu.
