NEW for Fall 2011:  Waitlist for classes in COIN

Beginning with registration for the Fall 2011 semester, Waitlist functionality will be utilized in COIN. Once a class is closed, students will be given the option of adding themselves to a Waitlist for that class.

Guidelines for Wait Listed Students

  • If a class is Closed, check the Waitlist if class is full option to add yourself to the Waitlist.
  • A spot on a Waitlist does not guarantee enrollment in the class.
  • Wait Listed students have the option of "swapping out" a class for which they are already enrolled, if a space becomes available in the Wait Listed class.
  • Check your Wait List status regularly. A green check signifies enrollment in a class; a yellow triangle indicates Waitlist standing.
  • Wait Listed classes will not count toward credits for full-time status. Undergraduate students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits to maintain full-time status for Financial Aid, Housing and Enrollment Verification.
  • Unresolved Holds may prevent enrollment in a Wait Listed class, once it is available.
  • A Wait Listed class must not conflict with the time of an enrolled class.
  • It is suggested to limit the number of classes on the Waitlist.
  • Enrollment in Wait Listed classes occurs every evening.

How the Waitlist is Managed

  • If a slot becomes available in a class which has a Waitlist, the system LOCKS the slot. Additional Students are prevented from enrolling in that class, because it will have a status of “Wait Listed” or “Closed.”
  • Every evening COIN attempts to put the next student on the Waitlist into the new opening.
  • If the next student on the Waitlist is eligible, based on criteria explained below, enrollment takes place and the class status remains “Closed” (because the slot was filled with the first Wait Listed student).

Criteria which will Make a Student Ineligible for Enrollment

  • A Hold that prevents registration.
  • Time conflicts with enrolled classes.
  • Pre- or co-requisite classes not being met.
  • Enrollment would exceed the student’s credit limit.
  • Student is enrolled in another section of the same class.
  • If the first student on the Waitlist is not eligible, enrollment will not take place. COIN will then proceed to enroll the next student on the Waitlist.
  • If no students on the Waitlist are eligible, the class will be open for enrollment (and will have a status of “Open”).
  • Eligible students will be notified via UMassD email of their enrollment in a class.
  • Ineligible students are not removed from the Waitlist. It will seem that COIN is “skipping” students on the Waitlist since the name remains.
  • Waitlists remain in effect until September 1, 2011.
