Windows
Your computer should already come with Windows Media Player. If you need to upgrade your player, download it from the Microsoft web site.
Mac
Windows Media files are not natively supported on Macs. You must download a free plug-in to watch the commencement on the Mac.
- Download and install Windows Media Components for Quicktime - requires Mac OSX 10.3.9 or higher. This will allow Quicktime to play Windows Media files natively. Note: You must click the play button to start the stream.
- Safari 4 has problems with Windows Media files. We recommend watching the stream in Safari 3 or Firefox.
- VERY IMPORTANT: The Quicktime that ships with Mac OS 10.6, aka Snow Leopard, will not support the components. You should download Quicktime 7 and then install the components to watch the stream.
- Download and install Windows Media Player for older Macs - This is the stand alone player for people running the classic Mac OS. Scroll down in the 'Details' box to find the download link. We do not provide support for this player.
iPhone, iPad, Android and other smartphone platforms
This year we are testing a mobile stream of our commencement. You can learn more and watch the stream by visitinghttp://www.umassd.edu/commencement/mobilewebcast.html
Linux
We do not provide support for these players. We mention them for informational purposes only.
Setup and Troubleshooting
Check your connection
A faster connection works best for streaming video online. A Cable, DSL, ADSL or T1 connection, or a network connected to one of these such as an office or home network, is recommended. Those using dial-up connections such as AOL or NetZero will likely get average to poor quality, and may loose the connection at random times. This is out of our control, due to the nature of the Internet, streaming media, and slower connections.
Check your firewall
If you have trouble connecting to the webcast, you should check the firewall on your computer network and/or on your computer. Check your computer's help files for help in dealing with your computer's firewall. If you are on a company or home network, check that network's settings or talk to the network administrator if necessary.
A firewall is very important to keeping your computer secure on the internet. If you make any changes to your firewall, make sure you know what you are doing, and keep track of what you do so you can change settings back if need be. You should consult technical support if you have any questions.
