Faculty, administrators and staff played in the first charity slow pitch softball game for the Raymond C. Barrows Community Service Book Fund. Twenty four players took the field for a friendly, competitive game. The event took place on Tuesday, August 28th at the women's softball field at UMass Dartmouth. Over $450 was raised during this event by the players, spectators and other employees of UMass Dartmouth.
The first pitch was tossed by Dr. Jean Kim, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. Players were evenly divided into two teams: Gray and White. The Gray team led for most of the game. At the bottom of the 7th, with the score 7-3, the White team pulled off a rally to come back. They chipped away at the score and eventually won the game, 7-8.
"The idea was raised about a charity softball game to benefit needy students," stated Louise Goodrum, the interim athletic director. "Our students are the reason we are here, so we researched some different scholarships available to them. This charity seemed appropriate because not only does it help students in need, but they will also benefit by conducting a community service."
The Raymond C. Barrows Community Book Fund was originated for students who are in need of money to purchase their textbooks. The student is a financial aid student and must meet at least two of the five criteria: full-time student status (4 courses with 10 or more credits) attending UMass Dartmouth; racial minority; first generation college student; learned English as a second language; graduated from an urban high school; and/or raised by a single parent. Student recipients must "pay back" their stipend by performing nine hours of community service and meet with a financial aid counselor for one hour during the semester in which the stipend is received.
This event was sponsored by Silva's Customer Printing & Embroidery who provided team t-shirts; Sodexho, who provided a BBQ after the game; and UMass Dartmouth Athletics, who provided the softball field complete with an announcer, a scorekeeper, a sound system and a volunteer to collect donations.
