Fireworks will fill the sky and music will fill the air at the Bank of America Freedom Festival scheduled for July 3 on the UMass Dartmouth campus.

The festival, sponsored by the Bank of America, will open at 6:15 p.m. with a concert by the pop/Latin band Santa Mamba, followed by a New Bedford Symphony Orchestra pops concert at 7:45 p.m. and concluding with fireworks at approximately 9:15 p.m.

Jackie Einstein, an executive from the Bank of America, will be a featured soloist accompanying the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Einstein will sing the National Anthem at the beginning of the program.

Ms. Einstein has performed at numerous professional sporting events in New England, including appearances at Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox. Last year, Ms. Einstein also performed as a guest conductor with the NBSO.

"We are thrilled to have Jackie perform for us this year," said university spokesman John Hoey.  "She is a fantastic singer and a wonderful representative for the Bank of America, exclusive sponsor of the Freedom Festival."

A large turnout is expected for the pops concert and fireworks finale.  Traffic, public safety and parking plans are in place through the coordinated efforts of university, local and state police.

Vehicular access to the campus will be shut down when all on-campus parking spaces are full and no later than 9 p.m.  Following the fireworks, traffic will flow one-way from the parking lots, as directed by public safety officials.  Parking will be banned along Old Westport Road throughout the entire evening.

These precautions will be taken to protect pedestrian safety, and to expedite the flow of traffic after the event, according to public safety officials.

Visitors are encouraged to bring along picnic suppers, lawn chairs, bug spray, and blankets to make themselves comfortable while enjoying this magnificent evening in the campus quadrangle area. The campus will be open all day and guests are invited to arrive anytime after 3 p.m. to find the best available seating.

Concession stands and vendors will have a variety of foods and novelty products available for sale to the public. This community celebration is presented as a family-oriented, alcohol-free event.

Visitors are advised to check the local radio and television stations for information about cancellation because of weather-related problems. In the event of rain, the fireworks will be cancelled but the concert will take place in the University's 800-seat main auditorium.  Information will also be available by calling the main university telephone number 508.999.8000 and by visiting the UMass website at www.umassd.edu.

UMass Dartmouth is located at 285 Old Westport Rd., North Dartmouth, off interstate 195. Traffic entering and exiting the campus will move in one direction only beginning at 6 p.m. University, state and Dartmouth police will direct exiting traffic, which will be channeled to leave the campus in both directions.
