Experiential Learning Requirements
First year students are welcome as volunteers. Sophomore or above standing and a 2.0 or better GPA is necessary to receive credit. Students earn 1 credit per semester and may take the Compeer experience for credit for up to 6 semesters. Students may earn experiential credits in psychology (Psych 298) or in nursing (Psych 298).
Students are assigned in pairs to programs that serve people with mental illness and spend a minimum of 2 hours a week at the program engaging in social and recreational activities with clients. Time slots are available on weekends and weekdays and during either the day or early evening. Students canchoose to visit community residence programs, day treatment programs, clubhouses, alternative high schools or inpatient units. (Students without transportation can pair up with a student who has a car.) You can find a list of placement sites on our website. Students call sites to arrange placement. Some sites do their own background checks, making it necessary that students contact them early (before the semester starts) to get started on visits in a timely manner.
