First year students are welcome as volunteers. Sophomore or above standing and a 2.0 or better gpa is necessary to receive credit. Students generally earn 1 credit per semester and may take the Compeer experience for credit for up to 6 semesters. Most students who participate enjoy the program and continue for more than one semester. Students may take their credits in psychology (Psych 298) or in nursing (nursing 298). Students must volunteer for 45 hours/semester for each credit earned.
Students are assigned in pairs to programs that serve people with mental illness and spend 2-3 hours a week at the program engaging in social and recreational activities with clients. Time slots are available on weekends and weekdays and during the day or early evening. Students can choose to visit community residence programs, day treatment programs, clubhouses, alternative high schools or inpatient units. (Students without transportation can pair up with a student who has a car.)
Click here for a list of placements. Students call our placements sites to arrange a day and time to visit. Please note that some sites must do their own background checks, which takes time, making it necessary that students contact them early (before the semester starts).
