Counseling Center

Alcohol & Drug Information

LauraJane Fitzsimons is our certified substance abuse counselor.   She is available to meet with you to discuss your concerns about your own alcohol or drug use, or your concerns about someone else's use of drugs or alcohol.    LauraJane is also available to speak to classes or other groups on topics related to substance abuse and chemical dependence.  The Counseling Center has a large self-help library with many books, pamphlets and other materials on drugs and alcohol and LauraJane frequently helps student find materials for classroom presentations and papers.

LauraJane also offers two groups for students each semester:

ACOA/Al-Anon Recovery Group.    Many share the experience of growing up in a home where alcohol affected their lives. They may also find that as adults they share some of the same stresses and problem areas. The group focuses on identifying negative family patterns, addressing these problem patterns and helping group members to find more effective patterns.   This group will meet at a time convenient for participants.   To sign up please visit the Counseling Center or send email (lfitzsimons@umassd.edu).   Please include a list of times you could participate in a group and contact info.

Dependency Recovery Group   Many students have made the commitment to lead alcohol/drug free lifestyles and we find that there are many common struggles in maintaining this lifestyle. This group will focus on identifying issues that could lead to a possible relapse and helping each other develop strong recovery skills. Relapse prevention planning will be stressed.  To sign up for this group, visit the Counseling Center or send email (lfitzsimons@umassd.edu).   Please include a list of times you could participate in a group and contact info.
