Counseling Center

MISSION, GOALS, FUNCTION

 Institutional Environment

The Counseling Center contributes to the quality of life in the entire University. Through committee work, research projects, consultation to other components of the University and advocacy, Counseling Center staff work toward the goal of ensuring that the University is a livable, hospitable place for students, faculty and staff.

Personal Development

The Counseling Center assesses the developmental needs of students and responds to these needs through outreach programs, workshops, presentations and consultation on a variety of topics.  Addressing career and lifestyle planning, relationship skills, adjustment to college and self-management skills helps students achieve more academically.

Mental Health

The Counseling Center provides clinical services to students experiencing psychological difficulties which interfere with their academic progress and general functioning.   Crisis intervention, medication management, individual and group psychotherapy, assessment and referral to outside providers for long-term treatment, and voluntary and involuntary hospitalizations for psychiatric illness are provided.

Campus Consultation

Students, staff and faculty can obtain support and training on how to handle a variety of interpersonal situations.   Counselors serve as mediators and as information and referral agents.

Student Retention

Maximization of students' functioning in pursuit of their academic goals is the ultimate goal of all services provided by the Counseling Center.
