Community Services ProgramFirst Annual ELCR Youth ConferenceTwenty one concerened area youth participated in the First Annual Community Leadership Youth Conference on August 12-15 2004 to increase leadershipskills and understanding of their community. According to Ken Pottel, Co-Director of ELCR "Our Conference was planned with activities designed to be engaging and thouht provoking as well as fun. While looking into the isssue of hunger in our community the conference attendees worked with a variety of organizations including; Friends Academy Ropes Course staff for leadership training and the UMD Art Education Department to create murals for the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen Dining Area." Bridget Halligan & Mura Jones from Old Rochester Regional High School with UMD's Kathy Miraglia, Director Master Art Education Program, Memory Halloway, Associate Professor Art History and Deirdre Healy, Community Service Coordinator at Salvation Army Kitchen Feedback from the conference has been very positive. According to one 10th grader "It was fun rooming with people and learning new concepts and more about the real world." Another conference attendee mentioned she would use information gained from the conference to increase community serice programs at Dartmouth High School. Organizers of the conference have already indicated they would like to offer the program again next year. The conference was sponsored in part by Educational Leadership for Civic Responsibility.
