How many credits can I get from participating in the program?

The following lists the hours of work required to earn a certain number of credits based on a 15 week semester:


1 credit  = 3 hours a week-totaling 45 hours
2 credits = 6 hours a  week-totaling 90 hours
3 credits = 9 hours a  week-totaling 135 hours
6 credits = 18 hours a week-totaling 270 hours


What are the advantages of participating in the program?

  • Gain work experience relevant to his or her abilities, needs and interests.

  • Put classroom knowledge to work in the real world
  • Expand your educational experience
  • Spend time in a new, off-campus environment


What types of experiences qualify?

A faculty member of the student's choice, called a faculty sponsor, and the sponsor's department chairperson  must approve the proposed experience, objectives, credit value, and the evaluation procedure. (For Business students the Assoc. Dean must approve). The faculty sponsor must be from the department most closely related to the nature of the experience.


How can I find an internship?

  1. Check out the listing of internships in the CRC; Lower level, Group 1 or view online at our internship search page.
  2. Contact the company/agency that interests you to schedule an interview.
  3. Get the Internship Program form from the Career Resource Center if you are doing it for credit only.

Can I participate in the program during the summer?

The Division of Professional and Continuing Education allows students to register for the Internship Program. Contact the Career Resource Center for costs, credit limits and form.


What is the eligibility criteria for the internship program?

  • Be enrolled in a degree program at UMD (Not a Special Student), And
  • Be at least a sophomore, but preferably a junior or senior, (junior status for Business Majors), And
  • Have a GPA of 2.0 or greater, And
  • Have approval from your Department Chairperson, And
  • Have the form submitted by the Add/Drop deadline.

To receive credit and approval from your Department Chairperson and Dean, you must not exceed 18 credits including the credits for this contract per semester. Please check with your academic advisor before submitting the registration form to determine your academic status and to further discuss the proposed experience.
