The Career Resource Center

CAREER CORNER

Welcome back!

The following information is available to students potentially interested in science careers:

The first career information site run completely by undergraduates was launched November 1, 2005, by the Journal of Young Investigators (JYI). JYI is an undergraduate-run, peer-reviewed science journal published monthly online (http://www.jyi.org). Funded by the Burroughs Welcome Fund, the Science Center (SCC) is targeting undergraduate students pursuing a career in a scientific field.

The SCC currently provides up-to-date information about science career areas and includes statistics, interviews and feature articles pertaining to careers in academia, science communication, industry, teaching and the government. The site also contains monthly columns written by science professionals. A special Resources section is dedicated to helping undergraduates find links to job and internship sites. These sites are all personally rated by SCC staff.

The SCC will increase the availability of science career-related information to undergraduates in the hopes that more students will opt to pursue science careers. Over the next year, the site is scheduled for massive development in the form of articles written and requested by undergraduates.

The SCC can be accessed at http://www.jyi.org/SCC/index.php

The Career Resource Center will be hosting a Professional Networking Seminar: "Etiquette Dinner with Moctail Hour" on Thursday, April

13, from 5 to 7:30pm at the Woodland Commons Community Center. Join us for some hors d'oeuvres followed by a four-course meal with special etiquette consultant Mandie Araujo, Esq., from Pardon Me, Inc.

Students will learn skills that will help them feel confident and effective at building relationships in all professional situations, business meetings and receptions, as well as other professional events where employers are present.

The Etiquette Consultant will review basic rules of dining etiquette, the nuances of fine dining, and how to avoid common dining faux pas. Students must be prepared to network with employers, as they will collect resumes at an information table.

Additionally, faculty and staff will have a chance to engage with company representative across industries, while enjoying fine dining. Please dress for success!

Tickets for this event can be purchased at the UMass Pass. The price is $7 per ticket with an ID. Tickets will be available from March 27-April 10.

Visit our website at www.umassd.edu/crc for the list of sponsors for this event. Also visit our website for our Calendar of Events for Spring 2006. Please call the Career Resource Center at x8661 if you have any questions.

This event precedes our 27th Annual Career Expo on April 27, 2006. Please call the office for more details.
