FEDERAL JOB LOCATION & DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM


A portion of federal funds is set aside to operate and maintain the Job Location & Development (JLD) program. The purpose of this program is to assist students in locating part-time jobs both on and off campus. The Career Development Counselor, located in the Career Development Center, is available to assist students who have Federal Work Study awards and students with no work-study award. The operation of this program allows all students to take advantage of employment to help with expenses while obtaining valuable work experience. A job posting board advertising local job openings can be found in the Career Development Center and is updated weekly with new opportunities.  Go to:  www.umassd.edu/cdc click on ‘for students’ click on ‘experience’ and log-in.  Career counseling, testing, and job search assistance is also available. The use of this service is free and available to all UMass Dartmouth students.

Mock Interviews:
Students can develop effective interviewing techniques through one on one role play with a career coach, role play with a visiting employer and by utilizing our simulated interviewer, via InterviewStream, where by your resume and interview are fused together, saved, reviewed, replayed, critiqued and can be sent to friend, a networked contact or an employer via internet.

Professional and dining Etiquette Seminars:
These seminars are designed to give UMASS Dartmouth students practical skills that will help them feel confident and effective at building relationship when they present themselves to an employer.

Informational Interviewing:
Informational intervieweing is one of the best ways to gain knowledge about a particular job or career field by talking to people who do the work in which you might be interested. Informational interviewing provides an opportunity to gather valuable information in a low-stress situation while allowing you to make contacts in your field of interest.

Career Planning:
Find out about the steps in Self-Assessment, Career Exploration, Gaining Experience and Implementing the Plan through 'Discover Your Career Path'. Take the 'TypeFocus' test, a career assessment evaluation tool.Trouble choosing a major? Read about common career areas, typical employers, strategies designed to maximize career opportunities and list of websites that provide information abouta particularmajor andrelated careers, in our 'What Can I Do With This Major?' section.

Alumni:
Whether you are a graduate of "BradfordDurfee Tech", "New Bedford Tech", SMTI, SMU, Swain School of Design, or any of the other predecessor institutions you are a member of the UMass family. As such we all share in the same mission. Alumni Relations offers a number of services to alumni and current students because the office's main task is to serve both the University and its Alumni population. In order to do this we offer a variety of services. Some are available for Active Alumni only. Career Coaching, Resume Preparation and Interviewing techniques, among others,are free to both current and future UMass Dartmouth Alumni.

Experience Program:
UMass Dartmouth internship program provides students with a learning environment that allows them to explore a career field, evaluate their knowledge, skills and gain valuable work experience. Placements include private corporations, government offices, nonprofit organizations as well as spending a semester interning through The Washington Center Program or Walt Disney College Program.
