Sharon Hartley Selected as the Rochester Woman of the Year

Leading for Learning director is also the chairwoman of the Rochester School Committee

sharonThe New Bedford Standard-Times has selected Sharon Hartley as its 2009 "Rochester Woman of the Year," in recognition of her succesful efforts to expand Rochester's Memorial School. The article can be found here. The Standard-Times honors members of the SouthCoast community with these awards every December.






National Teacher of the Year coming to CUSP

mullenThe JET program is hosting National Teacher of the Year Anthony Mullen (pictured at left accepting his award from President Obama) in an event at CUSP on May 20 at 4 p.m. Mullen, a former New York City police officer, is a ninth through twelfth grade special education teacher at the ARCH School, an alternative education branch of Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut.

It's the LAW! School Law Update

Discussion presented by the School Leaders Network

gavelAt this School Leaders Network event, Attorney Ginny Tate from the firm of Murphy, Hesse, Toomey and Lehane will address recent federal and state legislative changes, as well as recent case law which affects schools in the areas of special education, search and seizure, student records, discipline and other key topics.

Summer Seminar for School Teachers in England

englandDr. Gerard M. Koot, Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, will offer a five week National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar for School Teachers, and for prospective teachers in graduate school, on Interpretations of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. The seminar for 16 paricipants will be held at the University of Nottingham and at the Institute for Historical Research in London, from June 27 to July 30, 2010. NEH will provide a $3,900 stipend to cover accommodations, most meals, weekly field trips in England and about $900 toward international travel expenses.

Applications are due March 2, 2010.

Renowned education consultant Jennifer Abrams to keynote "Having Hard Conversations"

Conference presented by the School Leaders Network

Join us for a full day conference on effective communication and conflict resolution with national presenter Jennifer Abrams.

This lively workshop will inform participants about conflict and interpersonal communications. Participants will develop an action plan and receive scripting tools for having those necessary hard conversations.

Conference: Assessing the Impact of Staff Development

New England Staff Development Council's inaugural conference

ne nsdcCurrent research shows a strong positive relationship between assessing the impact of professional learning and increased student achievement. School leadership teams, professional learning developers, coaches, and higher education partners are offered this opportunity to participate with Joellen Killion, to look at the steps and resources needed to evaluate the impact of professional development programs on student learning in schools and districts.

Paraprofessionals: JET into teaching

JET logoAre you a paraprofessional, and interested in becoming a teacher? The Journey into Education and Teaching (JET) program at CUSP can help. This accelerated teacher licensure program enables paraprofessionals to earn associate's and bachelor's degrees from Bristol Community College and UMass Dartmouth, leading to state teaching licensure in Elementary Education and Moderate Disabilities. Participants complete courses together as a cohort, and are eligible for tuition scholarships from the state.
