Leading for Learning and the School Leaders Network

Third cohort graduates from LFL; SLN continues to offer popular events at CUSP

The third Leading for Learning Cohort has completed their program and submitted final portfolios of their work. Congratulations to Janet Belanger, George Fairbanks, Christopher Garth, Lisa Karantonakis, Sarah Ashley McPherson, Evelyn (Lyn) Rivet, Lisa Sirois, and Lori Weider! These candidates for Principal/Assistant Principal Licensure will be recognized for their accomplishments at a celebratory event on Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

lawOn February 11, 2010, the School Leaders Network hosted Attorney Gini Tate from Murphy, Hesse, Toomey and Lehane. Atty Tate addressed recent federal and state legislative changes, including the areas of special education, search and seizure, student records, and discipline (photo at left).

 


School Leaders Institute: Navigating the Way

Three-day summer institute in historic Plymouth, Massachusetts

School leaders, join us this summer for a three-day professional learning institute on the waterfront in Plymouth. Former assistant superintendent for curriculum and professor Louise Thompson will lead discussions about professional learning communities, walk-throughs, and differentiated instruction.

Monday, June 28 to Wednesday, June 30. 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Mark your calendars: the National Teacher of the Year is coming to UMass Dartmouth

mullenThe JET program is hosting National Teacher of the Year Anthony Mullen (pictured at left accepting his award from President Obama) in an event at UMass Dartmouth on May 20 at 4 p.m. Mullen, a former New York City police officer, is a ninth through twelfth grade special education teacher at the ARCH School, an alternative education branch of Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Although the event is free, registration is required.  Please RSVP by May

Sharon Hartley Selected as the Rochester Woman of the Year

Leading for Learning director is also the chairwoman of the Rochester School Committee

sharonThe New Bedford Standard-Times has selected Sharon Hartley as its 2009 "Rochester Woman of the Year," in recognition of her succesful efforts to expand Rochester's Memorial School. The article can be found here. The Standard-Times honors members of the SouthCoast community with these awards every December.






Conference: Assessing the Impact of Staff Development

New England Staff Development Council's inaugural conference

ne nsdcCurrent research shows a strong positive relationship between assessing the impact of professional learning and increased student achievement. School leadership teams, professional learning developers, coaches, and higher education partners are offered this opportunity to participate with Joellen Killion, to look at the steps and resources needed to evaluate the impact of professional development programs on student learning in schools and districts.

advocateCUSP's JET program that prepares paraprofessionals to become full time teachers is featured this month in a front-page story in the Advocate, a publication of the Massachusetts chapter of the American Federation of Teachers. Paraprofessionals: JET into teaching

JET logoAre you a paraprofessional, and interested in becoming a teacher? The Journey into Education and Teaching (JET) program at CUSP can help. This accelerated teacher licensure program enables paraprofessionals to earn associate's and bachelor's degrees from Bristol Community College and UMass Dartmouth, leading to state teaching licensure in Elementary Education and Moderate Disabilities. Participants complete courses together as a cohort, and are eligible for tuition scholarships from the state.
