Art Education Professor ARLENE MOLLO was recognized by the Massachusetts Art Education Association (MAEA) for having made a significant contribution to the field of art education in Massachusetts and was named Higher Education Art Educator of the Year for 2007. The award was presented at the MAEA Spring Conference in May 2007.

The ceramic work of Artisanry Professor REBECCA HUTCHINSON was the focus of an article, "The Gesture of Place," written by Rick Newby for the April/May 2007 issue of American Craft Magazine, a publication of the American Craft Council. In conjunction with the article, her work was displayed at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This fall, Hutchinson maintains an ambitious exhibition schedule with an installation at Vertigo Artspace in Denver, Colorado.

New work by Design Professor ZIDDI MSANGI will be part of Substance: Diverse Practices from the Periphery, a group exhibition at the Center for Visual Art in Denver, Colorado. This international exhibition is a ground-breaking effort that demonstrates how designers integrate research, process, and practice beyond the traditional confines of the studio environment to develop meaningful and often life altering design solutions. The exhibition will be on view through November 9.

In literary news, Art History Professor MEMORY HOLLOWAY recently had her book, Making Time: Picasso's Suite 347, released by Peter Lang Publishing. In the book, Holloway examines Pablo Picasso's controversial Suite 347 as a summary of the themes of the artist's work, set in the context of the student conflicts of May 1968 and his continuing experimentation as a printmaker. The cover of Holloway's book was recently added to the UMass Dartmouth Wall of Scholarship. The book can be purchased online.

Music Professor royal hartigan enjoyed an incredibly productive and prosperous Summer 2007. He organized a field research trip to Ghana, West Africa, which included eight CVPA students. He rehearsed and performed with such internationally-recognized artists as Hafez Modirzadeh, Danongan Kalanduyan, and Fred Ho's Afro-Asian Music Ensemble. hartigan also conducted final acoustic reviews of his CD, blood drum spirit live in china. This Fall, hartigan's recent book for drumset players, dancin' on the time, was added to the UMass Dartmouth Wall of Scholarship.

Design Professor LAURA FRANZ recently received an Award of Distinction in the 13th Annual Communicator Awards Print Competition for her project—a poster for Alan Shawn Feinstein. Professor Franz also presented at TypeCon 2007—the ninth annual conference of the Society of Typographic Aficionados, held in Seattle, Washington. Her presentation topic was [type]Faces of New Bedford: 300 Years of Lettering and Type. The typographic projects at the heart of this presentation are currently on display in the Purchase Street Window Gallery at the Star Store campus of CVPA throughout the month of September.

The work of Artisanry Professor STEVE WHITTLESEY will be the subject of a solo exhibition this Fall at the New Bedford Art Museum. The exhibition, Steve Whittlesey: Tables & Shelves, will be on view September 20 through December 31 and features hand-crafted pieces of Whittlesey's newest work, which both straddles and confounds the traditional, purist definitions of studio craft and fine art. The exhibition will be featured in the December/January issue of American Craft Magazine. Additionally, another of Whittlesey's pieces was recently on display as part of the Fiber National juried exhibition at the Lancaster Museum of Art in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Design Professor HARVEY GOLDMAN recently learned that his piece Tall Glia, was selected to appear in Art of the Digital, an international exhibition of digital art that will be on view October 6 through November 11 at the Lyceum Theatre Gallery in San Diego. Goldman's piece was one of 104 pieces chosen out of a field of 2,796 submissions from 40 countries. The exhibition was juried by Neal Benezra, Director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Earlier this year, Goldman's piece Undulation was part of the first-ever Virtual Music Marathon, held in April 2007 at Northeastern University in Boston. Other 2007 exhibitions: CYNETart Festival in Dresden, Germany (featuring Visual Music Animation); the 12th Annual Not Still Art Festival in Brooklyn (featuring Undulation); the Davinci Days 2007 Film Festival in Corvallis, Oregon (featuring Retina Regeneration); and the iV CGIV 2007 Online Gallery (featuring Between the Time Gate and the Early Shade of Dawn the Fragrant Bud and the Grave Firewood Ignite).

WAYMAN CHIN, Lecturer in Music, was awarded the Longy School of Music's 2007 George Seaman Award for Excellence in the Art of Teaching. Chin has served on the faculty of the Longy School of Music since 1994 and was appointed Chair of its Chamber Music Program in 2003. This honor is given in recognition of dedication and commitment to students and to the art of teaching; excellence of teaching and the ability to motivate student growth; dynamic and active participation in school activities; inspiration to students and fellow faculty and upholding a model of life-long learning.

Carousel, a video by Design Professor SHAWN TOWNE, will be featured as part of Pixilerations [v.4], a new media arts festival held as part of the larger FirstWorks Providence arts festival. The piece will be part of an October 3 screening at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence, and will be featured in an exhibition on view September 28 through October 14 at the Sol Koffler Gallery—located in the Rhode Island School of Design's Center of Integrative Technology. During Summer 2007, Towne also exhibited his work in Boston, Belgium, and Beverly, Massachusetts.

The lush landscapes of Fine Arts lecturer DON BEAL are the focus of a new show at Harmon Gallery in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The exhibition, Mälerisch, features the work of Beal and Calfornia artist Blair Thornley. To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, the Provincetown Banner featured an extensive profile of Beal in its September 6 issue. Earlier this summer, Beal's work was on view at the Westbeth Gallery and the Painting Center, both in New York City.

Summer 2007 was marked with a flurry of professional activity for Design Professor YOON SOO LEE. Her exhibition schedule included A Great Awakening at the Rhonda Schaller Studio in New York City; HEAT: Political, Sexual, Visual, Global at the Bromfield Gallery in Boston; Small Works at the Attleboro Arts Museum; and Here and There: Stories of Immigration at ArtWorks! in New Bedford.

FACULTY & STAFF IN BRIEF

A solo exhibition featuring the recent paintings and drawings of Fine Arts Lecturer ANTHONY FISHER will be on view at New York City's Galerie Mourlot from October 2 to November 9. The exhibition's catalogue also features an essay by Art History Professor MEMORY HOLLOWAY.

Fine Arts Professor STACY LATT SAVAGE received a mention in the April 2007 issue of Sculpture Magazine (a publication of the International Sculpture Center) for her entry in the Contemporary Sculpture Exhibition at the Chesterwood Estate and Museum, located in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

The humorous commentary of Design Professor VICTORIA CRAYHON'S digitally manipulated marquee photographs were part of Daily Encounters, a Spring 2007 group exhibition at Maryland Art Place in Baltimore, Maryland.

The work of Fine Arts lecturer ANDREW NIXON is currently on view in a solo exhibition at the Tolbooth Arts Center in Kirkcudbright, Scotland. The exhibition will run through October 14.

Staff member JARRAD NUNES recently joined the Board of Trustees of the New Bedford Art Museum. Jarrad also completed a successful summer season with his theatre company, New Bedford YouthREP, which presented A Chorus Line in New Bedford. Finally, Jarrad was chosen to host ampers&nd, a local arts and culture program presented by DCTV, the Dartmouth Cable Access channel.


STUDENT FEATURED NEWS

Two CVPA undergrads had winning entries in the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists' (AATCC) Concept 2 Consumer Design Competition. In this national contest, junior ELIZABETH EARLY placed first in the Apparel Category for her piece Raining Cats-Dogs, while Artisanry Certificate Program student JUSTINE FALLON place second in the Interior Category for her piece Hanami Blooming. The students received prize money ($1000 for Early, $500 for Fallon), a portfolio certificate, and complimentary student registration for the 2007 AATCC Conference in Charleston, South Carolina.

Several students, including MFA grads KRISTINA GORANSSON, KARA MUISE, and ANDI STEWART are currently featured in a group exhibition,LUSH, sponsored by the Textile Study Group of New Bedford. LUSH is an international exhibition of yardage influenced by the infinite microcosms of the natural world. The show also features work from and was organized in part by Assistant Dean CHARLOTTE HAMLIN. LUSH runs through October 18 in the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Gallery at Bristol Community College.

STUDENT IN BRIEF

The work of MFA student and fiber artist KRISTINA GORANSSON will be featured in the November/December 2007 issue of Fiber Arts Magazine in its annual Artists to Watch survey.

Master of Art Education student ANDREA MOORE was featured in the Summer Arts Edition of Cape Cod Life Magazine as the subject of an in-depth artist profile.


ALUMNI FEATURED NEWS

Check your local listings for the most recent work of alumnus DANIEL FLYNN (BFA, Digital Media, '06). Labor Day 2007 saw the premiere of Word Girl, a new PBS program featuring a crime-fighting superhero with a passion for correcting grammatical mistakes. Since March 2007, Flynn has been part of the flash animation team at Soup2Nuts, a digital animation firm based in Watertown, Massachusetts. Word Girl airs Fridays at 4pm on WGBH-TV (Channel 2).

The paintings of alum CATHERINE CARTER (MFA, '97) will be on exhibit at the United States Embassy in Yaounde, Cameroon, through the ART In Embassies Program. Carter has also exhibited in several juried shows in 2007: the National Prize Show at the Cambridge Art Association in Cambridge, MA; Massachusetts Artists 2007 at the Brush Art Gallery in Lowell, MA; Essential Elements at the Hera Gallery in Wakefield, RI; and Small Works at the Attleboro Arts Museum in Attleboro, MA.

MARGO LEMIEUX (MFA, Printmaking, '06) received a Packard Grant to participate in a rock art documentation workshop sponsored by the Nevada Rock Art Foundation in June 2007. Training included working on a 4000-year old Washoe Indian site in the desert north of Sparks, Nevada. She also presented a workshop called Expressive Sketching at Lake Mead National Park Visitor Center. Margo is Assistant Professor of Art at Lasell College in Newton, MA, where she teaches Drawing, 2D Studies, and a class in the Honors Program called Heroes & Dreamers: Creativity as an Agent for Change in which students study people who have used their art to further social justice. Also teaching at Lasell College are CVPA alumni DEBORAH BALDIZAR (MFA, Sculpture, '06), TORE TERRASI (MFA, Digital Media, '05), JEREMY RUDD (MFA, Sculpture, '05), and DAVID BONDAR (MFA, Painting, 06).

BRIAN FOX (BFA, Illustration, '90) was selected as the 2007 Major League Baseball All-Star Game's Commemorative Artist. With this honor, Mr. Fox spent All-Star Weekend in San Francisco, where he painted live at the 2007 Home Run Derby, and completed two original paintings representing the American and National Leagus. The original paintings were signed by the players, and auctioned off to benefit the MLB Players Trust. Fox has also been working with Disney as one of four artists creating original paintings sold exclusively in their galleries.

Multi-media artist JON TAYLOR (MFA, Wood/Furniture, '05) recently served as an Artist in Research (AIR) at the Berwick Research Institute in Roxbury, Massachusetts. While in the AIR Program at Berwick, Taylor conducted a series of social experiments that explored the commodification of the human body—including a unique real estate opportunity in which he invited the public to lease and develop portions of his head.

Alum WILLIAM HEKKING (BFA, Printmaking, '97) was recently named Program Manager at ArtWorks! in New Bedford. In his new role, William will oversee many of the organization's education, exhibition, and community outreach programs. William is also keeping busy this fall by curating (along with Jessie Nickerson) The View from Above, a regional exhibition of emerging artists at the Cotuit Center for the Arts on Cape Cod. The exhibition, which opens October 13, will also feature a video/sculpture installation by CVPA alum DON BURTON (BFA, Scuplture, '97).

The work of alum ELIZABETH SPOTSWOOD ALEXANDER (MFA, Wood/Furniture, '05) was featured in a March 2007 solo exhibition at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans. The show, entitled To the Briar Patch and Beyond, consisted of a collection of functional and non-functional wooden sculptures that were inspired by the storytelling traditions of the American South. One of Ms. Alexander's pieces was recently purchased as part of the permanent collection at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, also in New Orleans.

The work of alumna MIYUKI AKAI COOK (MFA, Fibers, '06) is currently featured in the Annual Faculty Exhibition at the Gallery at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts. Miyuki taught several design courses at the school during the Spring 2007 semester. The exhibition runs through October 14 and spans various areas of expertise and subjects, from political commentary to concepts on contemporary beauty, by more than twenty professional artists and designers who teach at the College. In September 2007, Miyuki was married to current MFA student DAN COOK.

SCOTT BRIGANTE (MAE, '05) was recently appointed Director of Visual Arts, K-12, for the Mansfield Public Schools in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Brigante oversees a faculty of twelve art educators, several of whom are CVPA alumni. This year, the Mansfield Public Schools helped two outstanding students gain admission as incoming freshmen to CVPA.

ALUMNI IN BRIEF

A photogrid by COLLEEN ELLIS (MFA, Graphic Design, '06) was accepted into and is now one of thirty images on view as part of Hands Off!, an international exhibition exploring possibilities in digital photography. The exhibition will be on view through September 28, 2007, at the Nan Boynton Gallery/621 Gallery in Tallahassee, Florida.

CHIRSTINE McINTYRE HANNON (MFA, Painting, '90) was selected as a finalist in The Artist's Magazine's Annual Art Competition. Her name will appear in the December 2007 issue in the Animal Art Category, for her work Frog in a Purple Bowl—an 11x14 acrylic on canvas.

Alum and local studio owner JOHN MAGNAN (MFA, Sculpture, '99) recently created a permanent mobile for the lobby of St. Luke's Hospital as a gift to the people of New Bedford. Titled Hope, the installation is a 24-foot representation of six sailing vessels common to the South Coast area. Each vessel is represented by thinly carved sails.

The work of recent alumna ALISON WELLS (MFA, Painting, 07) was featured as part of a Summer 2007 group exhibition, Driven 2 Abstraction, held at the Gallery at the Piano Factory in Boston. Ms. Wells' piece Belly of the Beast was used as the representative image for the exhibition invitation.

Alum JENNIFER DILLNER (BFA, Sculpture, '05) was accepted into the MFA Program at the University of Delaware, where she received a full tuition scholarship and was awarded a teaching assistantship.

The fiber art of JOO KIM (MFA, '05) was recently featured in the Invitational Fiber Arts Exhibition, held at Gallery Gac, in Seoul, South Korea.

Recent alumna ALEXIS WEGLOWSKI (BFA, Textile Design/Fiber Arts, '07) recently joined the staff of the costume shop at Boston Ballet.

Alumna PETRA KRALICKOVA (MFA, Ceramics, '04) was featured in a solo exhibition at the Black and White Art Gallery in Brooklyn. The exhibition, Silent Longing, was on view throughout Summer 2007.

Recent alum TIFFANY PLANTE (BFA, Sculpture, '07) was accepted to the Rinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art to continue her study in the field of sculpture.

Harvest Design, a design firm owned and operated by NANCY SWENEEY MANNION (BFA, Photography, '85) has recently celebrated its thirteenth anniversary. Harvest Design is a graphic communications studio located in Northborough, Massachusetts, which services higher education, non-profit organizatons, and the high-tech and insurance industries. Their clients include Clark University, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Becker College, United Way of Central Mass, and several Central Massachusetts high-tech businesses.

Two pieces from the visual thesis of recent alumnus BRANDON STRATHMANN (MFA, Drawing, '07) were recently added to the permanent art collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. In addition, several of Strathmann's anatomical whale studies in watercolor are being used for the Museum's many education outreach programs.

Alumna MELISSA HALLOCK (ESLINGER) (BFA, Graphic Design, '01) was recently hired by Orange Square Design in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Before joining Orange Square, Melissa was the Managing Art Director for Munroe Creative Partners, an advertising firm in New York City.

Alum DANIEL BECKER (MFA, Painting, '04) recently received a professorship at Gibbs College in Farmington, Connecticut. At Gibbs, Becker also serves as the school's newly appointed Internship Coordinator.

Earlier this year, the work of Brooklyn-based alum BEN BEAUDOIN (BFA, Printmaking, '93) was featured in a small group show at Jason Rulnick Gallery in New York City.

Alumnus EAMON BROWN (BFA, Scultpure, '03) joined the faculty at Boston University's College of Fine Arts for the Fall 2007 semester.
