RICHARD MAKSIAN - BFA in Digital Media, 2004
On his work:
Currently, I am part of the Creative Services team for Vacumet Corporation.
In my career, I've had the opportunity to design prototype concepts for products ranging from magazine covers to DVD packaging for blockbuster films--I've even designed beer labels! These concepts help to sell the products to an international audience that numbers in the billions.
On his recent accomplishments:
I'm especially proud of two awards our Creative Services team has recently won. Our holographic design for Rolling Stone Magazine's 40th Anniversary Issue helped win a Gold Ink Award in the ‘Magazine Covers’ category.
Our team also won an AIMCAL Award for our work with the labeling for Miller Lite Beer.
On his proudest achievement as an artist:
My proudest moment was walking into an electronics store and seeing our award-winning Rolling Stone cover sitting right beside a Scary Movie 4 DVD and thinking, “We designed both of those holograms!”
The opportunities and guidance given to me during my time at CVPA were invaluable and definitely helped jumpstart my journey as an artist. While I was going through my schooling, I always wondered when I would ever get to use all of the skills that were presented to us. As soon as I started my career I realized just how useful so many of those skills were.
On CVPA faculty:
I have so much respect for Design instructor Shawn Towne. My first class with Shawn was an introduction to Adobe Photoshop, a program with which I was very familiar. I expected a boring retread of information I already knew, but Shawn went above and beyond--teaching me to not only master Photoshop, but also to expand my knowledge of Adobe Flash. He didn't have to take the time after class to help me out with this complex program, but I'm so grateful for his generosity and knowledge.
On lessons learned in the "real world":
Always give everyone's ideas a chance, because sometimes it does take two or more minds to come up with something great. Collaboration is so important.
Advice for today's students:
Life is like baseball. It will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off. The right pitch will come; and when it does, be prepared to run the bases. Mistakes will be made, take them in stride. The right idea will come. Just be ready to run with your ideas!
