CVPA AT UMASS DARTMOUTH HOSTS SUCCESSFUL VOCAL PEDAGOGY CONFERENCE
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - On January 25-27 2008, the College of Visual & Performing Arts (CVPA) at UMass Dartmouth hosted a number of notable musicians and music educators for a Vocal Pedagogy Conference. The conferenc - entitled Vocal Pedagogy in the New Millennium: A Contemporary Commercial Music Approach - was developed by music faculty member and jazz voice studio director Marcelle Gauvin. Among those in attendance were music educators from schools throughout New England, including Harvard University, Berklee School of Music, Sarah Lawrence College, and the University of Maine; as well as international recording artists, professional performers, and speech therapists.
The conference featured presentations by Jeanette LoVetri and offered participants a Level One Certification in her method entitled Somatic Voiceworksm - the LoVetri Method. Based on years of voice science research, this cutting edge technique allows singers to adapt their voices to many musical styles without compromising the health of their vocal instrument. This versatile technique was demonstrated through live performances in a multitude of musical genres - including classical, jazz, rock, folk, musical theatre, and world music.
A Boston-area chapter of Somatic Voiceworksm-trained educators currently is being developed as a resource center for vocal pedagogy training & medical services.
This event was sponsored by the UMass Dartmouth Music Department, the UMass Dartmouth Foundation, and the UMass Dartmouth Jazz Vocal Guild. Marcelle Gauvin received her graduate level certification in Somatic Voiceworksm through Shenandoah University. After a successful inaugural event, additional certification programs and workshops are planned for UMass Dartmouth in 2009 and beyond.
