Faculty Laura Franz
Laura Franz earned her BFA in Graphic Design from Western Michigan University and her MDes in Communication Planning and Design from Carnegie Mellon University. She has worked as a professional designer since 1991 and has been teaching since 1996. Currently a Full-Time Visiting Lecturer at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, she teaches Graphic Design and Letterform in the Design Department.
In her work, Franz explores the communicative properties of time-based typography. In her research, she is interested both in social interaction in text-based media, and the artistic expression of girls' and women's voices. As a professional multi-media designer, Franz enjoys designing new-media products based on human needs and interaction.
Her time-based typography has been shown in Pittsburgh, PA; Los Angeles, CA; and Tokyo, Japan. She has most recently finished redesigning the structure, voice, and visuals of the University of Pennsylvania Law School web site (currently in production), and is embarking on a personal project collecting the stories of the women in her family.
