Faculty Magali M. Carrera

Chancellor Professor Magali Carerra received her MA, her Masters of Philosophy, and her PhD from Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. She earned her BA in Art History from Arizona State University. Prior to UMass Dartmouth, Professor Carrera was the Coordinator of Planning and Research for the Columbus Quincentenary Smithsonian Institution, responsible for the oversight of the Institution's Quincentennial programming and development of scholarly and public programs and exhibitions.

Carrera's research has been published in various academic journals and presented her research at national and international conferences. Her recent book Imagining Identity in New Spain: Race, Lineage, and the Colonial Body in Portraiture and Casta Paintings (University of Texas Press, 2003) received the 2004 College Art Association/Association for Latin American Art Book Award. Dr. Carrera's current research project examines the history of cartography in nineteenth-century Mexico and its impact on nationalist art. Along with history of art surveys, Professor Carrera teaches courses on the art and culture of ancient Mexico and Peru, traditional Africa and feminist theory and the history of art. She received the Class of 2003 Award for Distinguished Service to Students and the 2002-2003 University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Teacher of the Year Award.
